I switched to JFS this year (all my partitions). It is extremely fast with large files (dvd isos, etc), and large partitions. Formatting a large partition is a Snap. Using it as a root partition is, in principle, allowed, but there are some incompatibilities (google for them, specifically issues with grub). I had problems booting, even from lilo, on and off.
My next setting, whenever I have some time to do it, will be ext3 for the root partition, jfs everywhere else (/home partition and /data partition).
Some Tips
