Trouble getting this working due to wpa_supplicant

I have followed this guide but unfortunately couldn't get it working because of wpa_supplicant giving me errors. The first error it gives is ioctl[SIOCSIWMODE]: Invalid argument Could not configure driver to use managed mode I also get these other two errors ioctl[IEEE80211_IOCTL_SETOPTIE]: Operation not supported ioctl[SIOCSIWAP]: Operation not supported I have googled these errors but as of so far not found a fix that has worked with my slackware 11 with a 2.6.20 kernel get these errors when I execute "wpa_supplicant -Dmadwifi -iath0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant" even tried with -Dwext and the -B options
