Well I don't remember if Windows is media fault tolerant and how one would repair it *there* :-) I don't know if it was a download or DVD-R but ALT Desktop currently definitely lacks media check (as I've mentioned in public thanks/reply to Susan <a href="http://lists.altlinux.org/pipermail/desktop/2007-September/004976.html">here</a>).
Re security, it's definitely one of focus areas but traditionally considered with regard to "server" distros, not "desktop" ones. ALT Server 4.0 is quite hardened as well, but that's another story...
