Why not let the database also be built local to the machine by the individual users too, so that if A) they are not connected to the net 24X7 (hey some of are not), B) their lens is not yet in the web database or C) they don't want to trust the web database for some reason. Also if the users could start collecting and using the data NOW they would start seeing reason in supporting the project later.
