I work remotely and NEVER reboot any system without a serial console open on it. I do this for obvious reasons. I suspect you don't do sysadmin for a living.
You can get to the BIOS before the boot loader starts via serial... read the article again.
Very good article though I suspect some folks would need a pin out diagram for the null modem cables.
