To put it as plainly as possible, if they "aren't used to a shell interfaces" then they are in no way "Linux system administrators" in fact they are not even ready for training/apprenticeship as the most junior of "Linux system administrators".

If they don't understand and know how to use basic nix (command line) things like the a shell, ed, vi, su, ps, top, lsof, mount, ifconfg, route ... then they are not ready to even think about system administration.
