Rubbish, new administrators should learn from the ground up. They should be learning the shell as it's the most important aspect of Linux administration. Not to mention a Web or Mail server isn't going to have X for them to connect to!

It's like learning a new programming language - start coding in Vi (or emacs if that's your poison) until you've learnt the API, then choose a GUI IDE if you really need to. GUI apps are NOT for true administrators - you need to know how to fix that routing table when the shit hits the fan and you can only ssh in!
