What to do when apt-get fails

I fear that reinstalling with an older system seems to be the only practical solution, without manually picking through debs. It seems that dpkg -r is not smart enough.

Sid's xserver-xorg is currently broken in such a way :(. It cannot be installed, and is left in a state in which it cannot be un-installed, which breaks apt etc... There have been a lot of problems with sid recently, particularly with xorg. I am switching to lenny for new installs till things are better, and avoiding upgrading current installs of sid.
