I took a different approach at universal remotes. There is a project called LIRC it has been around for a long time. If you can follow simple electric diagrams you can build your own translator for all your remotes you want. You have a small computer do the translating and broadcasting of IR for you. I built a translator with a gumstix computer but you don't even need that much power. Also with this approach you can also setup any device IE: cellphone with bluetooth ... anthing that can send a signal to your pc can be used to signal a lirc deamon to send the nessisary signal to any of your IR devices in range. To boost my range to multiple rooms I use a series of IR repeaters I got from X10 works perfect. I like the credit card remotes I can now have that remote control things it wasn't even meant to control. I can't stand limitations.
