My name is Tomás and I use UFraw with Gimp for process my RAW images files on Linux. I have written two articles in spanish language that explain how to use Gimp and UFRaw to obtain similar result that if we used a software with 16bits support:

Basically, I open the same RAW several times with different UFraw-plugin adjust.
