I think the difference is during initial install. Although somewhat tech knowledgeable, Gentoo, and much moreso, Archlinux, were too advanced, too intimidating for a Linux beginner like me. I wanted to start with a functional desktop that will play mp3s and surf the web without needing to compile anything or download additional source packages from the internet. I turned to Ubuntu. I heard that recompiling kernels doesn't improve speed the way it used to- but I'm guessing at some point I will want to improve application speed and maybe app size? as my hardware ages. I might have tried paldo if I had known about it earlier. A source distro sounds useful, and maybe I should still try Gentoo someday, but I've already got Ubuntu installed- And if I want to compile anything now, I'll probably experiment with the distro I've already downloaded. If PALDO comes out with a PowerPC version, I might try it.
