Last time I checked, EVDO or HSPDA didn't use wires, and offer high speed. They happen to use hayes commands to connect.
same technique works for the Huawei E270. Configure a ppp device using ttyUSB0, put in the proper dial code for your provider (check the settings under windoze), and you're ready to go.
I'm waiting for the FC8 NetworkManager to support it, so manually starting the device isn't required. The version in the repository is a bit behind the svn version.
