There is a lot of focus on gui tools since linux became more mainstream, but what about mencoder/mplayer? It is *the* definitive video converter/encoder and is extremely versatile. I have never used a gui frontend to mencoder but I know they exist. The problem with most of the guis that I have seen is that they are very limited in their abilities.
