If I wanted a coke bottle, I'd go buy a coke in a bottle. Unfortunately, most coke bottles that I have come across do not have USB ports. VI is a neat editor, however the coke bottle keys get in the way. If your using a very dumb terminal (or remember that they once existed) you'd appreciate this.
Emacs fixed that, quite frankly it got around every annoyance that a terminal and its connected OS had to offer (VMS [vomit making system] anyone?).
Xemacs is a great editor, emacs is a great editor. If neither suits you, try nano (aka pico), it might be more to your liking.
The point is, spend more time being productive and less time figuring out how the hell your editor works.
Disclamer: I have a copy of emacs on tape, I paid $50 for it years ago.
