What is wrong with init? All init does is spawn processes. The other stuff mentioned is currently handled by other tools like hotplug, udev, the kernel (usb), etc. Network file systems have been a feature a lot longer then modern hardware so I am not sure how that made the list.
I wouldn't mind upstart as a companion to the "init"ial process, but to change it just because is lame. Also, what is wrong with cron?
