Hi there,
You can always install Restore to a Virtual Machine (VMware, VirtualBox, whatever) running under one of your always-on machines and associate an external drive to it, for example. In that way you would have a clean backup environment and later you could always transfer the Restore installation to another stand-alone machine, if needed.
