an act of desperation...

MS is prying on ignorance. How long do you think that is going to work? People aren't fools you know. Some of them maybe ignorant now, but sooner or later they are going to wake up and realize their mistake. And then kick MS out the door for its unfair practises (just like the EU did). It's like stealing candy from a baby. The baby is going to grow up one day and then MS is going to find it difficult to sell anything to that baby. Even if MS succeeds now, it's nothing but a shallow victory.

Interoperability! Phoey! The OOXML format is encumbered with patents held by Microsoft. Meaning officially adopting OOXML in any FOSS project, or for that matter any project will be difficult without infringing something somewhere. Also effectively meaning, use MS office along with OOXML. That is exactly the reason they are pushing for format standardization. Standardization is a complex process that requires serious thought. The very definition of the term means party and vendor neutral standards, which the OOXML format fails to address.

In India people are divided into two camps, people who can afford MS products. They are the more knowledgeable ones (the IT cos and the tech savvy customers) and pretty much know what MS is up to.Two, the people who can't afford MS products, well, they don't have too much of a choice really. Besides the FOSS community in India is growing pretty rapidly since it's a lucrative alternative to the ridiculously high prices at which MS licenses it products, not to mention their high hardware requirements.

This looks more like an act of desperation than anything else.
