This guy did make his money with open source. He started a company called Thawt that did digital certificates and encryption and he used open source software to make it and run his company (he used the debian distrobution). Then he sold his company to Verisign and thats how he got his money (or most of it).
Thank fully he's really put linux on the corporate map, and at the same time its a huge milestone for open source as it is sold on dells now!
