Use Wubi to install Ubuntu without partitioning

Since I spent some time with wubi, here are some tips:

-you can use SysInternals' contig utility to defrag only the ubuntu image files: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897428.aspx

-unmountable windows partition: not sure if the reason is still the same but due to the early mounting of a loop image on the windows partition the latter could only be mounted read-only. Knoppix has this problem as well for some time. Might be reasonable- imagine if you change the loop image file on which your root filesystem resides... Still, this was possible long ago with Knoppix (maybe different NTFS driver)

-you are actually not able to do some things with laptops- suspending and hibernating come to mind. The reason for this is that the two layers of mounted filesystems's state is hard to restore correctly- and safely.
