The example here seems very redundant. While this looks like a great peace of software, many routers support DHCP MAC based exceptions. That means that they will always give your laptops MAC address a specific ip address. Or, many distributions include network profiles, just set the home network to have a static ip.
VPN's are great for between 2 private networks through the internet, but are usless for an application like this.
