If Mark S. thinks that the only reason linux is behind in the OS war, is because of non-oss software and limited amount of 'ubuntu and free software' installed then he is clueless. If <insert device> doesn't work in linux and there are many of them, then what incentive are you going to offer people I wonder.
It takes more than a ill conceived <insert whine here> to convince vendors and users to scrap windows , when its all they have know for years and when the big ticket apps and games they use 'only run there'.
How ironic too that the very reason a certain to be unnamed DE was started, has been bastardized into the adoption of software with curious licenses under the veil of suspicious agreements.
