I use Wikkawiki as a PIM. (http://wikkawiki.org/HomePage) Which i run on my own server allowing me access from anywhere.

It gives password protection and is easy to manage. Also allows for mindmapping.
Much more than just a notebook.

For advanced users, it is also highly customizable. CSS template is easy to modify to match your own site.
