OOo Basic crash course: Creating a simple application launcher

I don't know if the author is reading this, but I'd like to request a howto on setting up a template with variables, and then creating a form which will automatically fill in the variables when the form is completed. A bonus would be a howto on setting it up as an autopilot.
Right now I'm pouring over the other howto's - it's what I've been looking for for ages!
