I'm using the Mandriva Free 2008 Spring 64 bit version that I downloaded in early May 2008 and have it installed on a usb hard drive . Grub recognised my Windows XP and it showed up in the boot up list automatically .
Boinc installs and runs with no problems at all , see this guide , http://www.joescat.com/boinc/
