Agreed freeciv or freecol could be a good choice.
I don't think running games under wine qualify as true "Linux" games. Also in my opinion preference should be given to open-source games.
A great option would be OpenArena and could potentially draw a greater crowd since the game is very much like Quake III, though it may not be bleeding edge.
