The correct choice for running VMware machines is to go with the operating system that the vendor is testing against. That would be Red Hat Enterprise Linux. If you can't afford Red Hat, use CentOS as it's built from the same source code.
Using any other operating system than these two means that the end-user is responsible for testing VMware against all the difference between RHEL/CentOS and whatever they happen to be using.
I'm not suggesting other versions of Linux won't work, just that it doesn't minimize risks or the amount of work you'll have to do to resolve problems.
