As a semi-professional lurker I have to say that it consistently amazes me how little the citizens of the USA understand the low regard that virtually all intelligent and educated Europeans / Asians / Australasians have for the "values" that the USA proclaims to hold dear. All credit to the US system for persuading so many people to exchange and embelish such views, but from anywhere over the horizon it sounds comically foolish.
Maybe it's the hypocrisy factor? 1776 was not the birth of democracy - when did universal suffrage arrive in the USA? It was one privileged group wresting control from another, not least to ensure the scope for subjugating the natives. It's blatantly clear that the USA is just another nation, entirely normal in its humanity, strengths and weaknesses. When it's strength is used for good (which it sometimes is) then many benefit. When used for ill (which it sometimes is) then many suffer. And more usually, in the moral porridge of reality, it's another confused and frightened child - but just happens to be the big fat one.
Happy Independence Day
