Absolutely right - the same historical evidence that power can be used for noble and ignoble purposes applies to every nation. I rather think that was what I said. Whilst the USA is uniquely powerful (at this moment in time) it is not uniquely moral. Or uniquely democratic. Or particularly a pioneer of democracy. Which I think you (rightly) acknowledge. I don't think some of the earlier posts were quite from that perspective, however. In fact, some read rather like a Victorian tract on the civilising obligations of the British colonialism. I certainly don't think the USA is intrinsically evil or immoral, but I am surprised by how many Americans believe the USA bears the definitive global "values" standard, and the start contrast of their viewpoint with the prevailing world view.
