I believe any country's independence day is important - for the citizens of that country. Nevertheless, I think that Linux.com, although it is run by an American company, should maintain a neutral position and not promote specific holidays. A short notice of "we're suspending operation for the holiday" would have been sufficient without the additional preaching.
