The idea of making use of the Internet to offer services to clients is a smart move. With these types of service, however, it is crucial to consider potential points of failures as well as to identify and plan for the worst case scenarios.
If all the documents are online, offline copies are a must. I know Google Docs has been trying out offline capabilities and those should be out by now in full. A network architecture point of failure analysis should be performed in regards to the global Internet access of this network of firms (i.e: do these firms have different exits to the Internet, or do they rely on a single node). Don't leave your business vulnerable to a denial of service attack.
I for one, fully support this type of progressive service. It has much potential. If you'd like to move into this type of implementation, I'd suggest you have a Computer Scientist with knowledge in both software and network security in your team.
