My point was that software based RAID often provides added flexibility towards recovery and removes the additional problem of finding a (or obscure) RAID controller card and/or drivers for it. The drive controller is abstracted out of the problem since almost all SATA controllers will be supported by any Linux kernel.

The other statements you've made are mostly correct. Personal responsibility is a good trait, however, jumping to conclusions when you don't know much of the background isn't.
