Software RAID all the way

I've used hardware and software raid in the past and now use software raid almost exclusively for a lot of reasons. IT does have its downsides (can't boot from a raid5 array for example) but its worth it. We don't see any measurable performance hit in our apps, even on the ones that are IO bound. But the biggest benefit for our environment is that we get a lot of strange and sometimes exotic hardware. Its nice to be able to manage it all with the same software instead of having to use a bunch of proprietary software.

its also allowed some strange requests to go through successfully, like converting two raid0 arrays to a raid5 array without downtime (a little LVM magic needed but was at least possible with software raid)
