Benchmarking hardware RAID vs. Linux kernel software RAID

One point related to the controller failure issue raised above is that some hardware RAID controllers can import RAID arrays created by earlier generation controllers from the same manufacturers. For example, I have personal experience of moving an array created by a 3ware 9500S onto a 3ware 9650SE. It wasn't necessary to attach each disk on the new controller to the same port number it had been attached to on the previous controller. I simply connected the discs to the new controller and everything just worked. I have no idea if other RAID controllers support this feature so it would be wise to query the manufacturer before buying hardware.
