I think Tom needs to qualify the statement "cryptography is not rocket science." Because, left at that, I question any of his understanding of security. Cryptography is a very difficult field, and only those who do it incorrectly or "play" at understanding cryptography would make a statement like that. This does not bode well for OpenID.
