Whether the original intention was "cryptography" or "cryptanalysis," the grandparent is right--both require extensive cross-disciplinary training, just like rocket science does. Crypto work is no place for amateurs, a lesson the Debian project learned the hard way. As Bruce Schneier put it, "anyone can create an encryption algorithm that he can't crack."
