I think companies like the prospect of Linux because it allows them to create their own custom software solutions.
One of our largest customers has us install a custom designed Linux distribution onto every PC we build for them. Their systems are used mainly for kiosk, and remote administration functions and using an open source OS allows them to tweak software to perfectly suit their customers needs.
Sounds like IGEL pretty much did the same thing, although building their own OS from the ground it is pretty impressive. Interesting article.
