The GNOME Foundation is a member of the ODF alliance (ODF is the standard format the Microsoft wanted to replace with OOXML). The commitment of GNOME to Free Software is not seriously in doubt, see its statement about OOXML:

There are genuine concerns about Mono, which Miguel de Icaza seems to be pushing, and which might well be a tool of a Microsoft "fifth column". But GNOME does not depend on Mono:
