I have to say that it's because of LyX that I started learning LaTeX. LyX presented the benefits of LaTeX and the styles-based typesetting. Later on, I started using LaTeX for advanced features and eventually started learning LaTeX, starting with math equations. I really like the fact that I can type LaTeX math commands and have them rendered right-away while editing.
