I work in library automation, and the note about Z39.50 isn't really correct. The Z39.50 spec allows for catalog searches from external sources, rather than only by the automation system internally. It's not specifically an interlibrary loan protocol, though it is frequently used to search across catalogs by interlibrary loan borrowers.
I have met developers from both the Koha and Evergreen projects, and Evergreen shows real promise to be adopted by large library consortia and academic libraries.
