An interesting idea. I can see how that might work for some people.
It would never work for me, though. I've got to have access to my e-mail /anywhere/ that I happen to be, so I just go with IMAP from the start. I don't really see any drawbacks to storing my e-mail on my domain server (I have e-mail accounts that came with my web hosting package).
If I really did want my e-mail to be stored on my own computer, I'd go ahead and get a static ip and set up a "full-fledged" mail server, and connect to it through IMAP. Is it really that hard to secure a mail server?
