All well and good, but it is worth mentioning that the alternative to all of this work is to install one of several "turn-key" email systems now available in the open source universe. One example would be Citadel [http://www.citadel.org] which installs with a single command and sets up SMTP/POP/IMAP/Webmail all pre-integrated with no editing of config files.

This article's approach is a valid one, too, and it's a decent writeup.
