i read this article, and decided to give OF 2.3 another go. Installed and updated it, and configured it to work with my AD in about 15 minutes. Seems like my AD permissions are even coming across ok, which is something that i haven't been able to accomplish in two days with ubuntu 8.04, likewise-open, and samba. It's actually a pretty decent setup -
