Same here, complications with uuids outweigh my benefits, I then labelled all my partitions,
settling for /etc/fstab entries like

LABEL=HilbertHome /home reiserfs defaults,auto 0 2

my grub kernel line is:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-2.6.24.4.slh.3-sidux-686 root=/dev/disk/by-label/HilbertRoottRoot ro apm=power-off nomce vga=0x317

and never had problems again.
