Centos 5.2 Live USB is what I use. Granted it didnt have some of the utils by default, but that was fixed via a quick "yum install", and the overlay filesystem stores all these items permanently.
The biggest thing I loved was that it supported my Nvidia video cards, so I didnt have to suffer thru painfully slow X on a recovery boot.
