It's a nice idea, but I'm not sure it is the right way to deal with this problem. PNGs are not well supported in IE6 so it doesn't actually fix that problem.
I prefer to use an overlay of sandbag divs. It works cross-browser and you still have just one image which avoids the problem the previous commenter made.
