I started out with Knoppix and then tried several different Distros, including Debian, before settling on Gentoo for about 4 years. I switched to Ubuntu about 4 or 5 months ago because I really liked how much easier setting up Compiz, etc was. Actually, basically everything has been easier. Updates don't take as long as still come out about as fast, tons of software in the repos, etc. I actually just want to use my system and not spend all day working on my system, and since I have one 64 bit server and three 32 bit desktops, running the same OS on all of them helps with that. Debian's good, but Canonical adds that polish that makes it great (YMMV).
