This entire utility is, of course, superfluous, if you have transitioned to the modern system of handling mail with Maildir.
Maildir keeps each message in a separate file. Strict handling removes the need for locking, so it is safe for multiple programs to access a Maildir at the same time. NFS-mounted Maildirs are safe and efficient. All the normal file handling commands are usable -- grep, mv, cp, rsync all do the right thing. Most modern mail programs handle Maildir storage just fine -- procmail, Postfix, qmail, exim, mutt, Thunderbird, and so forth.
