I think there's two lessons here.
1) open source REALLY does work. Not just the code, but the model. Woo hoo!
2) ISV's could learn a lot here. Too many ISV's base their code on custom packages that then conflict with whatever distribution they're installing on. Thus, they build a less attractive solution for everyone and ultimately cause themselves more long term work for a short term fix. How many more users of zimbra, zenoss, etc, etc would there be if these ISV's would follow the same rules as the distributions do? "yum install zimbra" that would be awesome.
