From a cost/functionality point of view, solution like Google Apps for domain (Calendar included) could be one of the effective email/calendaring solution. Not open source but starts from free to a very low fee/year. Nothing against open source products or author here and I have no affiliation with Google, other than using their services.
IT functions such as email/calendars are now a cookie cutter approach and it is best for IT resource to get creative elsewhere. If you look around at your work, business side is looking at IT to help them and crack yet to solve problems. Open source comes very-very handy for IT here.
