I've found the BSD variants to have generally good documentation, with OpenBSD's being the best, and FreeBSD's coming in at a close second. GNU software seems to me to be less well documented, and Linux kernel related documentation being the worst (the kernel evolves too quickly).
Still, I personally find OSS to have better and more extensive free docs than Windows.
